Edward M. Thompson, 81, of Naples, FL, died on
February 11, 2011.

Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gladys M.
Thompson of Naples; and his three children, Stephen M.
Thompson, and his wife, Liz, of Daniel Island, SC, Terrie
T. Brown, and her husband, Art, of New Canaan, CT, and
Edward M. Thompson Jr., and his partner, Barbara
Davis, of Charlotte, NC; and eight grandchildren, Emily,
Kate, Edward, Maggie, Ben, Shelby, Taylor, and Logan.

Ed was born in Washington, DC on November 21, 1929. He graduated from
Anacostia High School (1947) at age 16. He then attended Woodward Prep
where he was named to the All Prep Football team. Upon graduation he enlisted in
the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for four years during the Korean War
.
Following his service he attended Wilson Teachers College (now University of the
District of Columbia.) Upon graduating in 1955 he attended The Graduate School,
at the University of Maryland, while teaching school.

In 1957 he began a distinguished insurance career when he joined The Travelers
Insurance Company in Washington, DC, subsequently being transferred to
Nashville, TN. In 1965 he returned to Washington, DC to become a partner in the
insurance agency, Ross, Gleeson and Groves where he worked for 28 years. He
resided in Clinton, MD for nine years and moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1974. Ed
retired in 1992 to live full time in Naples, FL.

A loyal and caring friend, Ed was an avid golfer, tennis player and pinochle player.
He was a former member of Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, VA, and
Wyndemere Country Club in Naples. He was active for many years with the Lions
Club and the Rotary Club.

A memorial service is planned for Tuesday, February 15th at 4:00 p.m. at North
Naples United Methodist Church, 6000 Goodlette Road, Naples.
