EDWARD M. BURT "Bama"
Born February 23, 1931, died peacefully on April 17, 2013 at his home
on Lake Gaston in Littleton, NC surrounded by his family.
He was born in Birmingham, AL, the son of George W. Burt, Jr. and
Ida Roseburg Burt. He moved to Washington DC at the age of 14 where
he played football for and graduated from Anacostia High School.

He entered active service in the Air Force in 1951 and served in the
Korean War as a Cryptographer until being honorably discharged as a
decorated Staff Sergeant in 1954.
On July 24, 1954 he married Betty Ann James at Ryland Church in
He graduated from Benjamin Franklin University with a Bachelors
Degree in Accounting in 1958. He was Co-Manager of Southeast Marine
in Washington DC until opening Burt Marine Center in Alexandria, VA
in April 1964. He was also a licensed real estate agent in Maryland,
Virginia, and North Carolina. He retired in 1983 to his home in North
Carolina and filled his days with family, good friends, and service to the
community. He was an active member of Lions Club International, The
Loyal Order of the Moose, The American Legion and was a member of
the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club for 28 years.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 39 years in 1992, his
brother, Col. George W. Burt III and his sister, Lena Mae Jowers. He is
survived by his son, Travis, wife Cassie and their children, Branden and
Kirsten Burt; and his daughter, Tanya Burt Brett and husband, Mike.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 20, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m. at
Massey Funeral Home, 839 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
Funeral Services will be conducted at Calvary United Methodist Church,
16 Calvary Church Road, Littleton, NC on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at 3
p.m. Interment will immediately follow.
