Pieter Brakel 1946 - 2015

Pieter Brakel, 69, died Thursday, December 3, 2015 in
hospital from complications related to lung cancer. He
passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded on all
sides by family who loved him.

Pieter leaves behind his devoted sons, Hendrik (Erin) and
Thomas (Thoko); his (separated) wife Betty; and his
cherished grandchild, Owethu, with whom he had a special bond. Pieter also loved his
brothers Jan and Pim, his sister Josie, and his predeceased sister Helen.

Pieter was brilliant, a great teacher and a thoughtful intellect. With a Ph.D. in economics from
the University of Toronto, his Master's from the London School of Economics, and his
Bachelor's from Princeton, he had a distinguished career in the Canadian Department of
Finance for 21 years. He then left to travel the world. He worked as a Macroeconomic Advisor
in Madagascar (1997), Indonesia (2000), Montenegro (2002), Kyrgyzstan (2004), and India
(2005). He was adventurous - he loved travelling and meeting new people.

Even more, Pieter loved his family. He was a caring father who guided his rebellious teenage
boys through challenging times and helped them to succeed. He was so proud of his sons and
he was always there to support them. We miss him terribly and we owe him everything.

Donations to the  Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by his family. In
accordance with Pieter's wishes, we held a small family celebration of his life, to tell stories
about Dad, and relive cherished memories.

Thanks for everything, Dad/Pieter/Opa, we love you.
