Dorothy LaRoe Viera
Equestrian Training School Owner
Dorothy LaRoe Viera, 78, who owned and operated the Weathervane Riding Academy in
Spencerville for about 15 years until she sold the business in 1980, died of a heart attack Nov.
6 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.
Mrs. Viera, a longtime Spencerville resident, was a native of Washington and a graduate of
Woodrow Wilson High School (1939)
After working as an office secretary at Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, she pursued her
lifelong love of horses, becoming a riding instructor.
She started her riding school in Silver Spring in 1965 and later moved it to Spencerville.
Her marriage to the Rev. Joseph K. Peaslee, ended in divorce. Her second husband, Frank
Viera, from whom she was separated, died in 1966.
Survivors include two daughters from her first marriage, Beth Rawcliffe of Rockville and Sherry
Devore of Marriottsville; and three grandchildren.
