M. LORRETTA POLEND (nee Bones)
On October 1, 2014, Lorretta Polend of Rehoboth Beach, DE, passed away after a long
battle with breast cancer.
Born in 1938, Lorretta was a native of Washington, DC, where she graduated from
Western High School (1956).
She worked briefly for the CIA and Groff & Groff Patent Attorneys before settling in for a
more than 30 year career with Westinghouse.
She and her late husband, Bob Polend were avid square dancers and beach lovers.
When she moved to Rehoboth Beach in 2003, Lorretta became active in the Delaware
Cheer Centers, volunteering many, many hours welcoming members and participating in
trips. Lorretta was an avid football fan and was always rooting for her Washington
Redskins or Virginia Tech.
She is survived by her son, Jamie (and his wife, Amy) of Lewes, DE; her sister, Dottie
Hanson of Vienna, VA; her nephew, Michael Hanson (and his wife, Rhiannon) and
great-nephews, Rhys and Samuel and great-niece, Meghan of Arlington, TX; her niece,
Stacie Mobley (and husband, William) and great-niece, Maryann of Winterville, NC; and
her cousin, Thomas Haynes and his children, Tiffany and Jason of Fairfax, VA.
Visitation will be held at Short Funeral Home, Georgetown, Delaware on Monday
evening, 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, October 7 from 11 to 12 Noon, where Service will held
at 12 Noon.
Burial will be on Thursday October 9 with a graveside service at 11 a.m. at Ft. Lincoln
Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Rd., Brentwood, MD.
