John G. Lumpkin, born in Athens, Ga., on Sept. 6, 1921, passed away quietly and
peacefully in his home in Florida on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011.
He moved to Washington, D.C., in his early teens. He excelled in all sports at Western
High School (1939) and beyond.
He married Edna Mae Childs on Dec. 20, 1946, after serving four years in the U.S. Navy
during World War II. Dec. 20, 2011, would have been their 65th wedding anniversary.
John is survived by his wife, Edna; their four children and their spouses; five
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was the heart and soul of his large
family. He had strong principles and values and passed those on to his family over the
John's career was in the auto industry, working mainly for Chevy Chase Chevrolet in
Bethesda, Md., for 35 years. He was respected and loved by all who worked with him. He
could bring out the best in a person. A fitting description of John was that he was a true
After retiring in the early '80s, he and Edna moved to Lake of the Woods and became
actively involved in the church. It was an important part of their lives. He fought cancer for
several years and is now resting in peace with the Lord.
A service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the hospice of one's
