|Gloria Beverly Harshfield Simpson

Passed away peacefully in Alexandria, VA at age 87, on
Wednesday, August 28, 2013. Born in Washington, DC on
November 18, 1925, she was the third of six children of
Lonie J. Harshfield and Beulah M. Fielder. Wife of the late
Wallace M. Simpson; mother of Kimberly Jane (Washington,
DC), Wallace Morrison (Fayetteville, NC), and Craig
Douglas (Hampton, GA); sister of Diane Smith (Sarasota,
FL) and the late Adele Gavin (Falls Church, VA), Robert
Harshfield (Fairfax, VA), Richard Harshfield (Vienna, VA),
and Lona Dailey (Front Royal, VA). Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Western High School (1944) in the District, she obtained her
degree at Wilson Teachers College (now Howard University).
She worked for the Defense Mapping Agency, and for the renowned political cartoonist
Herblock. She also worked for the State Department in the U.S. and Germany, for the
U.S. Army (MTMC) as a defense contractor.
Afterward, she was an admired elementary school teacher for almost 15 years. She also
served as a secretary for the Church of the Epiphany for several years. She loved travel,
taking trips to Russia, Israel, Egypt, and countless countries in Europe.
When she wasn't busy raising her family, she enjoyed music, playing the drums, and was
an avid reader. She was proud of her Class B Golf Championship title at the Llanerch
Country Club in the early 60's.
Family will receive friends at the NATIONAL MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 7482 Lee
Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042 on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from 9 to 10 a.m.
A graveside service and interment will follow at 11 a.m. at STONEWALL MEMORY
GARDENS, 12004 Lee Hwy, Manassas, VA 20109.
