Edith Helmbold Wallick
Published in The Washington Post on July 15, 2014

Lovingly passed away at the Silverado Senior Living Center
in Escondido, California on Friday, July 11, 2014 with her
three children around her.

Edith was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on July 19,
1925 to Betsy Wick Helmbold of Dearborn, Michigan, and
Gerald Hammond Helmbold of Columbus, Ohio. Growing
up in Georgetown, Washington D.C., Edith graduated from
Western High School in May of 1943. She was one of
only ten percent of women from her high school class who
went on to college. Edith graduated from Duke University
in May 1947, majoring in English, where she acquired a profound love of romantic
literature, poetry, proper grammer, and higher education.

After graduating from college, Edith returned to the DC area and worked at the Central
Intelligence Agency, Department of the Interior, National Institute of Health's National
Library of Medicine, and later in women's retail at Talbot's in suburban Maryland.

She enjoyed playing golf with her friends, family and children, as well as long walks in
beautiful Annapolis, Maryland. She possessed a keen mind for bridge, winning multiple
tournaments. She also loved West Highland White Terrier dogs and passed that love on
to her children. One of Edith's favorite pastimes was doing the Sunday Crossword Puzzle
in the New York Times Magazine. It wasn't unusual to get a call from her on Sundays
about what word or phrase would correctly fit in some complex, partially filled-in puzzle.
Edie also loved gardening, and her homes were decorated with colorful azaleas,
impatiens, roses, and sweet smelling gardenias. It was always a pleasure dropping by
her home, and having a fresh salad with her home grown tomatoes.

Growing up, many of Edith's favorite times were spent with her family at their house in
Bay Ridge in Annapolis, Maryland. It is here that she developed her love for the beach,
the Naval Academy, and homemade peach pies made with fresh peaches picked from
their tree.

Edith is predeceased by her parents Gerald and Betsy Helmbold, and her beloved sister
and brother-in-law, Geraldine & William Sandeford.

Edith is survived by her two sons Robert of Boston, MA, and Jonathon of Frederick, MD;
her daughter Jennifer Wallick Nelson of San Diego, CA; their spouses (Barbara A.,
Barbara J., Robert Nelson, respectively); and her beloved grandchildren Lauren (Wallick)
Snowden, Amy Wallick, Danny Nelson, and Michelle Nelson.

A memorial celebration of life service will be held at the Silverado Senior Living in
Escondido on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 2:30 p.m.

A small memorial service for family and close friends will be held in Annapolis, Maryland.
