Hazel Surface Tavenner
Hazel Tavenner passed away peacefully on June 16, 2016,
at her home in Leesburg, Virginia. She was surrounded by
Hazel was born on April 29, 1933, in Washington, D.C., one
of three children of Oliver and Emma Viola Surface. She
graduated from McKinley High School in 1951.
She moved to Leesburg, Virginia where she married her late
husband, of 35 years, James H. Tavenner. She worked as
a Switchboard Operator for Loudoun Memorial Hospital early
in her career before becoming a Medical Receptionist. She
retired in 1995 after 25 years.
She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Leesburg Volunteer Fire Company.
She enjoyed spending time with her family & friends.
Hazel is survived by her three children, David Tavenner, Daniel Tavenner, Debra Tavenner and
daughter-in-law, Nancy Tavenner. She is also survived by her four lovely grandchildren, Daniel
Tavenner, Jr., Tori Tavenner, Bradley Tavenner and Megan Tavenner, along with her niece,
Keena Surface and great nephew Donovan Surface.
She is preceded in death by her husband James H. Tavenner, her daughter, Doris Tavenner,
parents, Oliver & Emma Viola Surface and two brothers, Wendell Surface and Donald Wayne
Family will receive friends between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at
Colonial Funeral Home, 201 Edwards Ferry Road, NE, Leesburg, Virginia 20176.
A service will be held on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 starting at 10:00 am at Colonial Funeral
Burial to follow the service in Union Cemetery, Leesburg, Virginia.
