Frederick Maurice Kaplan
(Age 87)  

On October 10, 2018, a long-time resident of Germantown,
Maryland died peacefully in his home, after a long illness with

Fred served his country in The United States Navy, aboard
the aircraft carrier USS Mindoro during the Korean War
where he earned The National Defense Service Medal and
The Naval Occupation Service Medal. As an aerial photographer, he was charged with
photographing and documenting all aspects of life aboard ship, to include photographing the
search for enemy submarines. Later, his technical expertise and love of photography, set the
path he would follow. He taught photography at Montgomery College, continued working with
cameras, camera equipment and selling cameras, to such notables, as former First Lady
Jacqueline Kennedy and one of our country's leading inventors Jacob Rabinow, amount others.

For almost four decades, he owned and operated Transcolor Photo in Rockville, near the
courthouse, where he was entrusted with developing photos and the safeguarding of evidence
of hundreds of important cases, that were tried in Montgomery County. He worked closely with
the Montgomery County Historical Society, to preserve the history of Montgomery County.
He was an avid pilot and fly fisherman, often flying his friends to Canada and other fishing
destinations around the globe. His love of reading was with him throughout his life, always
believing, "That a book is a magical thing, that lets you travel, to far away places without ever
leaving your home."

Without question, Fred will be most remembered for his wonderful sense of humor!!

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Alice, his sons, Michael, Phillip and Steven Kaplan,
Breck, Greg, Michael, Bobby, Kevin and Chris Kraft, grandchildren, Grant, Quinn, Gregory,
Hailey, Izzy, Chloe, Jillian, and Karter Kraft, nieces, Lynn Anton and Nancy Allman.
