Dorothy Lucas Coates

Lorraine passed away peacefully on February 8, 2018. She was born April 13, 1924 in
Washington, DC, to Medford and Marie Lucas. She grew up in Washington and graduated from
McKinley Tech High School, (1942)
In November, 1945, she married Gilbert Coates, her high school sweetheart. In 1956 they
purchased a house in Falls Church, VA, which she called home for 60 years. In 2015 she
moved to The Virginian in Fairfax, VA.

Lorraine was a vibrant lady who loved life. She was devoted to her family, leaving her children
and grandchildren a legacy of love and caring. She enjoyed music, her Nats and UVA sports.
She loved to laugh and shared her positive view on life with all around her.

Lorraine was preceded in death by Gilbert Coates, her husband of 69 years, and a son, Neale.

She is survived by a son, Wayne Coates (Bunny) of North Carolina; daughter, Nancy Ledford
(Greg) of Washington, DC; a daughter-in-law, Sue Coates of Florida; grandchildren, Jeff
Coates, Spencer Coates, Emily Ledford Roiff (Michael) and Alan Ledford; a
great-granddaughter, Tuesday Roiff .

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Murphy
Funeral Home, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church, VA, with private interment to follow on
Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at National Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the  St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or at (in memory of
Dorothy L. Coates).

The family thanks the dedicated and caring staff at The Virginian for creating a loving
environment where Lorraine thrived.
