DURHAM – Mary Frances Allen Shreve, passed away
peacefully Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Duke University
Hospital. Born July 18, 1932 in Washington, DC, to parents
Charles Watson Allen and Mary Frances Dean Allen.
Frances graduated from McKinley Tech High School
in 1950, and then from Strayer Business School in 1952.
In 1954, she married the love of her life, James Clark
Shreve in Washington, D.C., who passed away October
27, 2012. She was a faithful member of St. Luke’s
Episcopal Church since 1965, where she served in
many volunteer capacities, including the Altar Guild,
Prayer Chapel Candle Ministry and the Search Committee.
She was an active volunteer in the Durham community,
including Girl Scouts and Meals on Wheels.
Frances loved spending time with her friends and was an avid bridge player. She was proud to
be a survivor of breast cancer in 2005. Frances was blessed to spend many years between
their family residence in Durham, and their home at Topsail Beach, where she generously
shared her love of the beach with friends and family.
She is survived by her three children, Virginia Shreve Huntington ofLynchburg, VA, James
Daniel Shreve and wife, Mitsy Rains Shreveof Clayton, and Elizabeth Shreve Dougherty of
Hillsborough. She was known as "Honey" to her five loving grandchildren, LeighHuntington
Mazzone and husband Luke Mazzone of Charlottesville, VA, Joshua Renfrow of Durham,
Patrick Dougherty of Hillsborough,Sarah Shreve of Clayton, Mary Katherine Dougherty
ofHillsborough; and great grandson, Emmett James Mazzone. She is survived by her brother,
Kenneth Edward Allen and wife, Penny, her sister-in-law Carolyn Johnson Allen, and numerous
nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother
William Watson Allen.
