John Bernard Conaghan, On Thursday, August 30, 2018,
John Bernard Conaghan passed away at Georgetown
University Hospital in Washington, DC.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Helen,
as well as his children, John F. Conaghan (Mary), Mary C.
Donatelli (Doug), Joseph M. Conaghan (Linda) and Thomas
P. Conaghan (Stephanie).
He leaves behind his sister, Lillian (Religious of the Sacred Heart, R.S.C.R.) (95), brother,
Richard (93) and sister, Patricia (81), as well as 13 grandchildren, (Helen, William, Douglas
("D.J."), Matthew, Maggie, John ("Bo"), Ann, Lilly, Johnny, Chloe, Caroline, Christine and
He was predeceased by his sister, Ann Jack Conaghan
Was born in Memphis, TN on October 21, 1932. As a young boy in Tennessee, he survived
being hit by a milk truck at the age of two and, later, at the age of four, a serious case of
polio that left him paralyzed for a year.
Jack Conaghan graduated from St. John's College High School (1951), Georgetown
University (1955) and Georgetown University Dental School (1959).
He served in the U.S. Navy for three years prior to starting his dental practice downtown DC.
Jack practiced dentistry for 30 years on K Street and was loved by his patients for his smile
and big personality. He also quietly provided pro bono dental services to the poor on
Saturday mornings throughout his career and enjoyed bringing his children with him as he
delivered Thanksgiving meals to needy families. Jack was an avid tennis player and real
estate speculator. He loved being Irish.
Visitation at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, Maryland from 12 noon to 1
p.m., on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, followed by Mass of Christian Burial celebrated
at 1 p.m.
