Joseph A. Dunn Sr., 81, who operated a construction and remodeling company for many
years and later became a real estate appraiser, died Jan. 24 at his home in Silver Spring's
Leisure World. He had pulmonary fibrosis.

Mr. Dunn was a native Washingtonian and a graduate of the old  
St. Anthony High School
(1946).

He served in the Army as an infantryman in World War II.

After graduating from Catholic University in 1950 with a bachelor's degree in civil
engineering, he worked as a civilian engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers in Alaska.
In the early 1950s, Mr. Dunn bought Smither & Co., a construction firm that specialized in
remodeling commercial buildings. He was president of the company until he retired in 1992.

He lived in Silver Spring before moving to Rockville in 1990. He was a member of St.
Catherine Labouré Catholic Church in Wheaton and later of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in
Rockville. He had a second home in Oak Orchard, Del.

A daughter, Clare L. Birnbach, died in 1995.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Patricia Krogmann Dunn of Silver Spring; three
children, Joseph A. Dunn Jr. of Rockville, Diane Shapiro of Potomac and Dennis Dunn of
Silver Spring; a brother, Larry Dunn of Olney; a sister, Eileen Trevisan of Potomac; and nine
grandchildren.
