Robert Zulin, 85, a retired high school history teacher, died of congestive heart failure Oct. 16 at the Premier Care Center in
Palm Springs, Calif. He lived in Palm Springs.
A native Washingtonian, Mr. Zulin graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1940 and attended the University of
Maryland until he was drafted into the Army during World War II.
He served in the European theater, and his division was overrun by Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. He was captured
Dec. 18, 1944, and spent 4 1/2 months as a prisoner of war. After two unsuccessful attempts, he managed to escape on a third
try. He was so badly frostbitten during captivity that he received a medical discharge from the Army. Among his awards was the
Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
Mr. Zulin returned to the University of Maryland and graduated. He received a master's degree in education from the University of
New Mexico in Albuquerque in 1953. The next year, he moved to Los Angeles and taught in the public high schools in the
region. He retired in 1992.
He enjoyed horticulture, photography and travel.
Survivors include a sister, Lois J. Cohen of Alexandria.
