Mary Lillia Reaney Thompson
October 16, 2020 - October 27, 1922
Mary Lillia Reaney Thompson, of Brick, NJ died Friday surrounded by her loving family at
her son’s home in Wheaton, MD.
She was born in Washington, DC on October 27, 1922 and was the youngest of four
daughters. She attended Theodore Roosevelt High School (1940) in Washington, DC,
the same town where years later she would meet her husband of 54 years while working as
a secretary for the Connecticut Insurance Company. They moved to Bloomfield, NJ in 1952,
then Glen Ridge and East Brunswick before settling in Howell in 1960 where they raised
their family. In 1995 they moved to the Greenbriar community in Brick, where she enjoyed
the company of friends as an active member of the quilting club and the Red Hat Society. A
communicant of All Saints Episcopal Church in Lakewood, NJ she taught Sunday school,
made vestments for the choir, was a member of the Altar Guild and served as the office
secretary. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross, was a Cub Scout leader, and
was active in the Howell Township Parent-Teacher Association and the Howell High School
Mary was never far from her sewing machine or a needle and thread, making the most
creative Halloween costumes, doll clothes, prom dresses, pillows, needlepoint, and quilts
for friends, charities, children and grandchildren. Her artistic skills were also evident in the
paintings and ceramics she made, along with her custom-made cakes that always featured
the party theme. Family and friends could count on a celebratory note or card from Mary in
the mail but in 1998 she received her first personal computer and this soon became her
preferred form of communication. As digital devices changed her expertise grew and she
faithfully used her iPad to communicate with loved ones and online friends each day. Her
humor and wit endeared her to friends and strangers alike.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Daniel Thompson; parents, Arthur
Frinsham Reaney, Mary Lillia (Maysie) Dent Reaney, sisters, Marguerite Reaney Tugman,
Jane Olivia Reaney Linton, Grace Dent Reaney Sisson.
