Dr. Joseph M. English III 1943 - 2017
EASTON - Joseph M. English III, 74, died June 16, 2017 at
the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical
Center in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Dr. English was a well-loved
pediatrician in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area for 34
years. He retired in 2008 and moved to Easton, Maryland.
His diagnostic skills, expertise, and political conversations
were valued greatly.
In addition to his medical practice, Dr. English served as an
assistant professor at the Georgetown University Medical
Center. He was active in Catholic Relief Services during the
turmoil in Southeast Asia in the 1970's, hosting families from
Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Dr. English was active in his
local parishes (Holy Redeemer in Kensington, St. Peter's in Olney and Sts. Peter and Paul
in Easton). He taught Pre-Cana classes for couples in preparation for marriage, lectured
on behalf of Right to Life, and coached little league baseball teams. In retirement, he
volunteered for the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Easton.
Dr. English was born in Philadelphia in 1943 to Dorothea Jackel English and Joseph
Martin English, Jr. The family moved to DC in 1944 for his father to accept a job with the
FBI. Dr. English graduated from Gonzaga College High School (1961) and received his
Bachelor of Science degree in 1964 from Georgetown University. He was able to pay his
way through Georgetown University medical school while working during the summer at the
FBI. He received his Medical Degree in 1968. He received the Lange Book Award for
outstanding academic proficiency in 1966, and was selected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor
Medical Society in 1967. Dr. English did his internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and his
residency in Pediatrics at Bethesda Naval Hospital. The family lived in Naples, Italy, from
1971-74 where Dr. English served as a physician in the Navy and achieved the rank of Lt.
Dr. English and Rose Marie Delaney were married in 1965 and had six children; Catherine
Elizabeth (deceased), Joseph Martin IV, Teresa Jeanne, Michael Walter (wife Elldwinia),
Stephen Thomas (deceased), and Nicholas William (wife Christina). He is survived by his
wife Rose Marie, and would have celebrated 52 years of marriage on July 3, 2017. He is
also survived by four of their six children, 12 grandchildren; Matina, Patrick, William,
Shaymus, Dominika, Gabriel, Stephen, Michael, Shante, Austin (Amari), Ebony, Joshua,
and two great grandchildren, Aubrey and another girl expected in October. He is also
survived by his sister, Jeanne Sullivan (Peter) and brother, Thomas F. English (Peggy).
One of his nephews, Sgt. Thomas Sullivan, served with honor in the Marines in Iraq.
His health was compromised from exposure to the Burn Pits in Iraq and he passed away in
2009. Research is being done to help our servicemen who return home similarly afflicted.

Services will be held on Thursday, June 22nd at 11 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in
Easton, MD at 1210 South Washington Street, Easton, MD 21601.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 21st from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein
and Newnam Funeral Home at 200 South Harrison Street, Easton, MD 21601.
