Helen Gertrude Fowler

Helen Gertrude Fowler, 100, a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church,
died of a stroke Aug. 12, 2006 at Sibley Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident
of Washington.

Mrs. Fowler attended
Eastern High School (1920) and the old Business High School
in the District and went to work as a stenographer at age 14. She later worked for many
years as a legal assistant in her husband's law office.

In 1921, she joined Die Stauffacherin, a Swiss women's heritage organization, and
served as president, secretary and treasurer during her 85 years in the group. She also
served as secretary of the Swiss Benevolent Society of Washington. She was a
member of the board of trustees of the Methodist Home of Washington and served on
the board of directors of a carbonated beverage trade group.

In 1940, she joined Wesley United Methodist Church in Washington, where she was a
member of the builders club and other committees.

She enjoyed playing the piano and accordion.

Her husband of 36 years, Henry M. Fowler, died in 1976.

Survivors include two sons, John M. Fowler and Richard H. Fowler, both of Washington;
a stepdaughter, Dorothy L. Marsden of Reisterstown, Md.; five grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
