DeWitt Frederick Cupp of Harrisonburg, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on
February 7, 2017.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Norma; his parents, DeLong
M. and Lessye Cupp; sisters, Mary Rose, Kathryn Blaine; and a brother Gerald.
He is survived by one daughter, Jennifer Jolene Showalter-Cupp; one son, Timothy Earl
Cupp (Jenifer); grandchildren, C.R. Munn IV (Christie), Meaghan Showalter Munn, Sarah
Cupp Kress (Tom), and Timothy Dennison Cupp; and one sister, Ruth Maneely.
DeWitt was born March 24, 1918 in Briery Branch, Virginia. In 1925, the family moved
to Washington, D.C., where he attended Eastern High School (1936).
He volunteered for World War II in 1942, serving proudly in the Marine Corps as a non-
commissioned officer. He trained as a paratrooper and later participated in operations
at Tarawa, the Gilbert Islands, Leyte, and the Philippine Islands, among others.
DeWitt was a mechanic by trade and a member of the International Association of
Machinists as a journeyman mechanic. After moving to Harrisonburg, he worked for
Hartman’s Trucking and Safeway Stores.
DeWitt was a member of Washington City Church of the Brethren, and following his
move to Harrisonburg, became a member of Antioch United Church of Christ. He was a
Mason for over 65 years.
After retirement, DeWitt enjoyed making furniture for his family, especially his
grandchildren, in the shop he built. DeWitt was a loving, kind, humble, quiet man, who
lived a life devoted to family, faith, service to others, and love of country.
Family will receive visitors at McMullen Funeral Home, 5784 Greenmount Road,
Harrisonburg on Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at Antioch United Church of Christ, 4107 Fort Lynne Road,
Harrisonburg, on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. with burial at Oak Lawn
Cemetery in Bridgewater.
