Jean Duke Southmayd, 85, a club member and Washington native, died Jan. 25 of respiratory failure at a retirement home in
Mrs. Southmayd, a fifth-generation Washingtonian, graduated from the old Central High School and attended George
Washington University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She was a longtime resident of Bethesda and was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, Congressional
Country Club, the Sumner Garden Club and the Florence Crittenden Circle, a women's service organization.
During World War II, she was a volunteer at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
She moved to Harbor Bluffs, Fla., in 1980.
Her husband of 52 years, John Pixley Southmayd, died in 1994.
Survivors include six children, Carol Marquardt of Belleair, Fla., Susan Fry of North Potomac, John P. Southmayd Jr. of Annapolis,
Jeffrey Duke Southmayd of Ocean Hammock, Fla., Brian Lee Southmayd of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Charlotte Mary Southmayd of
Largo, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
