|Hazel M. Smallwood Hanback
Hazel S. Hanback, 90, director of the documentation division for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command from 1953 until her
retirement in 1981, died Nov. 3 at Maple Ridge, an Alzheimer's disease care center in Rockville. She was a Washington resident.
Mrs. Hanback received the Defense Department Certificate of Merit in 1965 for helping create more effective publishing
technology. She started her federal career in 1942 as a State Department clerk.
From 1979 to 1995, she was a trustee of George Washington University and in 1995 was named an emeritus trustee.
Hazel Marie Smallwood was born in Washington and graduated from the old Central High School in 1935.
She received a bachelor's degree in political science from GWU in 1940 and a master's degree in public administration from
American University in 1968.
She was a past president of the West End Citizens Association.
Her husband of 48 years, William B. Hanback, died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Christopher Hanback of Bethesda, and two grandchildren.
