Gertrude E. Payne Hampson

Gertrude Hampson, 92, a native Washingtonian who served overseas as a secretary with the State Department's Foreign Service, died
Nov. 21 of  pancreatic cancer at Chiswick House, a rehabilitation facility in Norwich, England. She had lived in England since 1975. Mrs.
Hampson was born Gertrude Elizabeth Payne and was a graduate of the District's old  
Central High School. She joined the State
Department during World War II and was assigned to Paris in 1944. She resigned her post in the late 1940s upon her marriage to Frank
A year after her husband's death in 1958, she rejoined the Foreign Service and served in Turkey, Germany, East Pakistan (modern-day
Bangladesh), Syria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
She returned to Washington from 1970 to 1972 before settling in England in 975, when she married Kenneth Hampson. He died in 2002.
She had no immediate survivors.
