Carleen L.M. Sims, 98, a past president of the local chapter of the Achievement
Rewards for College Scientists Foundation, a national organization that provides
scholarships to outstanding students, died Feb. 16 at Maplewood Park Place
retirement community in Bethesda of complications from a broken hip.
Carleen Loeffler was a native of the District and a 1930 graduate of the old
Central High School. She received a bachelor's degree in 1934 from the College
of William and Mary in Williamsburg.
Mrs. Sims volunteered with the Gray Ladies at the old Mount Alto Hospital in
Washington and was a member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Bethesda. She
was a member of Congressional Country Club and the Army Navy Club
Her first husband, Clarence C. McClaine, died in 1956. Her second husband,
retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Turner A. Sims Jr., whom she married in 1958, died in
