RUSHING, Robena

Robena Leona (Hodgson) Rushing was born August
12, 1921 in Plasterco, Virginia, the daughter of the
Reverend George Byron Hodgson and Lessie Mae
(Anderson) Hodgson.

She died peacefully on September 3, 2016 in
Norman, Oklahoma where she had lived since 2008.
She grew up partly on her grandfather's farm near
Bristol, Virginia before moving to Washington, D.C.,
where she graduated from
Central High School
in 1940.

In 1942 she married William Jackson Rushing, Jr. who had a long and distinguished
career in the US Army. As a military spouse, Robena lived in Shanghai, China, Frankfurt
and Schweinfurt, Germany, Fort Benning, Georgia, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and San
Antonio, Texas. Her husband's last tour of duty was in Austin, Texas, where she lived for
forty-five years. A homemaker and devout Christian, for many years Robena was a
member of Hyde Park Baptist Church and more recently of the Austin Baptist Church. An
ardent patriot, she was a generous supporter of the Disabled American Veterans . She
and her husband Jack were long-time leaders in the Austin citywide PTA. She was a
very active member of the Retired Officers Wives Club in Austin for forty years. Robena
loved flowers and studied floral arrangement and delighted in home decoration,
especially at Christmas. One of her favorite pastimes was reading novels, which she did
almost to the very end of her life. And it must be said that she loved chocolate and Big
Band music. She was a kind, generous, and compassionate person who loved her family
and friends, of which she had many.

Robena was preceded in death by her husband, her brother Joe Williams, Sr. and sister
Elloween Jones, and her son-in-law Carroll Petrosky. She is survived by her sister
Georgia Mae Birdsall of Silver Spring, MD; daughter Diana Sue Rushing and husband

Petrosky Brandenburg and husband Lucas of Burnet, TX; Christopher Petrosky and wife
