Evelyn Eckert Shank


Passed away peacefully at John Knox Village,
Pompano Beach, FL on November 25, 2012.

Born on April 19, 1907 to Charles and Mary B.
Eckert in Washington DC, Evelyn attended
High School
and the University of Maryland, and
was the first woman to study mathematics there. She completed her
undergraduate studies as a modern language major, earning BA and MA
degrees, and later an MEd.

A lifelong member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church and the Order of the
Eastern Star, she was a dedicated educator, teaching at Prince Frederick,
Oxen Hill and Hyattsville Sr. and Jr. high schools in the Maryland school
system during her 34 year career; she continued work after retirement to
Hollywood FL by tutoring Vietnamese refugees in ESL.

Evelyn is survived by her brother Russell Eckert of Pompano Beach, FL;
her sons Charles Curtis (and wife Doris) of McLean, VA and George
Edward (and wife Michelle)of Summerville, SC; her six grandchildren: Linda
Waits, Evelyn Nicole Shank, Lisa Dodge (and husband Jon) Noelle Lavach
(and husband Chris), David Shank and Charles Shank and six
great-grandchildren: Garrett Waits, Nora Shank, Katie and Bethany Dodge,
and Haley and Jackson Lavach.

A private burial is scheduled at Glenwood Cemetery on 7 December. The
family requests contributions to John Knox Village Health Center Fund, 651
Village Drive, Pompano Beach, FL 33060 in lieu of flowers.
