Anna Jean Oliver
Anna Jean Oliver passed away peacefully on February 16,
2017 with loving family by her side.
Jean was born on February 19, 1928, grew up in Washington
DC and graduated from Central High School (1946)
where she was named "Most Athletic". Although a city girl at
heart, Jean moved to a more country setting in 1947 when she married Calvin Byrd
Oliver, the son of an Annandale, VA dairy farmer (Robert Stringfellow Oliver).
Rescued by Calvin on his Indian Motorcycle when Jean's car broke down, Jean and
Calvin built their home on family property in 1956 where they raised two children, Robert
Wayne Oliver and Cathy Charlene Oliver. The Oliver home was an active gathering place
for extended family and friends with nonstop pool and poker challenges, horseshoe and
badminton "tournaments" and dancing parties. Jean was skilled at cooking, decorating,
and singing, but dancing was her passion whether jitterbugging with Calvin and Robert or
coaching Cathy in her dance endeavors.
After Calvin's passing in 1978, Jean immersed herself in health and fitness as an
aerobics instructor for DC's who's who, including senatorial, congressional and
corporate wives at the Augusto Martin Studio. At 70, Jean was featured in a Washington
Post article about the Center Club fitness center in VA.
In addition to Robert and Cathy, Jean is survived by her two granddaughters, Cari Gay
(Oliver) Bergner who Jean and Calvin loved nurturing in Cari's early years and Lily
Elisabeth Oliver; son-in-law Larry Bergner; great grandchildren, Amanda, Andrew Calvin
and Ethan Bergner; Robert's companion, Sally Koch; son-in-law Robert Brant (Cathy's
husband), who helped care for Jean; and her special poodle, Sabrina.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jean's honor to Hospice of the
Chesapeake or The Galesville Heritage Society. A memorial service is planned for
Hardesty Funeral Home, P.A.
