ALBERTA RAY1923 - 2020
ALBERTA C. RAY
Alberta Cole Ray, born January 26, 1923 to the late
Mary and Lorenzo Cole, was an only child. She was a
fighter from the very beginning—born weighing only 1lb
6oz, with her mother’s bosom serving as an incubator.
At an early age, Alberta accepted Jesus Christ as her
Lord and Savior. She attended First Baptist of
Fairmount Heights and later joined Beulah Baptist Church in NE, Washington, DC. Her
ministry was lifting spirits with her loving, hand-written cards that she sent for every
occasion. She also enjoyed helping and encouraging others (from behind the scenes) in
any way she could.
Alberta grew up in Washington, DC and graduated from Cardoza High School (1941).
She started her career shortly after at the Navy Yard, and went on to work at the YMCA,
Government Printing office, and ultimately retired from the Bureau of Engraving and
Printing in 1987.
Alberta married her love, the late Hubert Clyde Ray, Sr. April 7, 1941. From their union,
four beautiful children were born. She had a spicy sense of humor and loved to laugh and
tell jokes. Alberta was always up for a good time. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, and
spending time with her family and friends, whom she adored. Alberta also loved
gardening and flowers, and was known to say… “give me my flowers while I am alive” and
when asked how she was doing… “I won’t complain.” She was a tenacious and faithful
woman who loved life and defied the odds many times, beating cancer 3 times, in her
70s and 80s—a true overcomer.
Alberta was very active in her community—The Town of Fairmount Heights, where she
raised her family and resided for more than 70 years. She participated in the community’
s senior’s organization and served on the board of elections in her beloved town. Her
beautiful, caring spirit and camera-ready smile will be missed by all who were blessed to
Alberta was preceded in death by her parents, Lorenzo and Mary Cole, her husband,
