Thomas Joseph McDonald

resident of Reston, Virginia, Tom passed away peacefully
on Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

He was 83. Born January 21, 1933, in Washington, DC.
Attended St. Johns College High School, was a graduate of
Anacostia High
and earned a degree from The George Washington University.

Served honorably in the Marine Corp and Naval Cadet Program, Awarded the
National Defense Ribbon and is listed in the Navy Memorial Log. He had a
multifaceted career path; social worker in Harlem, NY, one of the original Peace
Corps employees; photojournalist, new-homes sales person and marketing
manager; and successful business owner. Tom was a continual learner and a
master communicator. He was nationally competitive in the sport of fencing and a
long-time DC champion. He enjoyed the visual and performing arts, and found joy
dancing Country Western, Argentine Tango, and especially the West Coast Swing.

In retirement he initiated and was proud to be a founding member of the currently
active Unity Men''s Group in Northern Virginia. Those who knew Tom valued and
respected his integrity, honesty, kind heart, courage, keen wit, strength of character,
wisdom, giving nature, and his willingness to help and influence others along their
life''s journey. His presence and welcoming smile will be missed.

He was the son of Jane Lavelle Sheehan and Joseph Michael McDonald and the
cherished and loving husband of Jane McDonald. Father of Sean Bowen and
Brendan Bowen; stepfather of Brad McElroy and Michael McElroy (deceased). Also
survived by four grandchildren, Becca, Liz, Mike and Dan; one great-grandchild,
Natalie; and a host of loving relatives and friends whom he dearly loved.

The family is grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from his
extended family and friends. Gratitude also is expressed to helpful nurses and staff
of Capital Caring Hospice Services and representatives of Money & King Funeral
Home in Vienna, VA.

A Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at the St.
John Neumann Catholic Church, 11900 Lawyers Rd., Reston, VA.

A celebration of Tom''s life will follow.

Interment at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
